Trim-Tex in the veins of Gold Coast University Hospital

Gold Coast University Hospital is one of the largest medical facilities in Queensland, created to be at the cutting edge of technology, education and patient care.

The project started was started in 2008 and completed in the second half of 2013 culminating with the opening of the hospital on the 28th of September 2013.

It’s a staggering 66% larger than the old Gold Coast Hospital with the site covering a massive 20 hectares.  Total floor space of the project is 170,000 square metres spread over 7 buildings.

Plastering and internal finishing was carried out between August 2010 and April 2013 and undertaken by four different contracting companies: NWCI, TAF, Mewcastle and Superior Walls and Ceilings.  At the peak of the project Superior alone had 120 men working on the site.

Matt from Superior Walls and Ceilings spoke to us about the project and why they chose to use Trim-Tex products. Super Seal L Bead was one of the Trim-Tex products used extensively throughout the hospital. It was recommended to the builder by Superior due to it’s flexibility and characteristics that allow thermal movement between partition ends and external facades.  Superior used Super Seal L Bead at all perimeter junctions on the project, Matt commented “we found it to be an extremely useful product because it minimised onsite defects and acted as a seal, therefore no caulking was required”.  The contractors using the product  found Super Seal to be a very versatile trim and loved the Tear Away strip which minimised excess compound on the finished substrate.

Wallboard Tools would like to congratulate everyone who was involved with the planning and construction of Gold Coast University Hospital. Particularly to Superior Walls and Ceilings who recently took out the Association of Walls and Ceilings Major Commercial Award for projects over $1 million.
