Tapping the well of plastering talent

2013 Apprenticeship ChallengeThe Trans Tasman Apprentice Challenge held between the 21st – 23rd of October  in Hobart, Tasmania was one of the highlights of the AWCI conference described by Andrew Clark from Wallboard Tools.

This years challenge was to construct and trowel a wishing well from plasterboard and other commonly used materials like metal studs. Participants were judged on workmanship, safety and attitude.

2013 heralded one of the strongest fields of competitors to date including the first female in the challenges history Tamara Jenkins from WA.

On the judging panel this year was Andrew Scott (Tas Tafe), Warren Banks (Tas Tafe) and Mark Toy (Holmesglen Tafe). They commented that voting was very close and that the work produced was of the highest quality. The judges were especially impressed with the way the teams worked together.

The winners for 2013 were the team from Tasmania comprising of Ashley Grossmith and Anton Lapalombara.

Congratulations to all of the participants in this years challenge – it’s always an honour to watch the next generation of plasterers displaying not only their skills but their passion for the trade.
