Safety first at the AWCI Qld Apprenticeship Challenge

The Apprentice Challenge, organised by The Association of Walls and Ceiling Industries Queensland was held at TAFE Queensland Skills Tech Acacia Ridge Campus on the 20th May 2015.

The competition is open to apprentices in their second, third and fourth years and this year the teams were tasked with constructing 6 metal framed structures. This task tested the participants skills on plastering applications including metal stud work, bulkheads, cornice, ceiling roses, sheeting and setting.

Wallboard Tools was proud to sponsor the Safety Award at this years challenge. We offer a big congratulations to Nick Swayn from CMG Plastering who took out the award.  Steve Guest from Wallboard Tools commented “that it was heartening to see the extremely high level of safety employed during the 8 hour challenge”.  He went on to say that “it was this high level of attention to safety made that made it difficult to select a winner for the award. Nick was awarded the prize due to his extra attention to maintaining site cleanliness throughout the day”. We look forward to continuing to support the challenge and encourage Safety best practice on site in the the future.

The winners of the Qld Apprenticeship Challenge  will be announced at the AWCI gala dinner in Brisbane on the 8th August. Two competitors will also be named to represent Queensland in the Trans-Tasman AWCI Apprentice Challenge in October.
